I have widely elucidated the role of the subconscious mind, and its implication in our experience of reality and life. It is time to continue our journey into the depths of the mind.

The CONSCIOUS MIND is the aspect of the mind experienced as combinations of thought, perception, memory, emotion, will and imagination. Thinking involves the cerebral manipulation of information, as when we form concepts, engage in problem solving, reasoning and making decisions. Here is the seat of all voluntary action, the home of reason and the higher intellectual faculties.
So far as we know, our higher mental functions seem to have their immediate seats in the cortex of the brain, and of these mental functions the anterior frontal lobes appear to have the power of inhibition. This is as near as we can come to absolute localization of the mental faculties.

The process of thinking has not been yet entirely elucidated. For some scientists, it is a strict neurophysiologic process. The human brain processes more than 400 billion bits of information per second; but we are aware only of 2 thousand of the whole number. So we are continuously bombarded by information coming from every direction and “hitting” our senses to be afterwards selectively erased or retained by the brain. But still, the whole process from the “first, original thought” is not utterly known.

For some psychologists, other neuroscientists and philosophers, the process of thinking involves not only a physiologic process related to the brain; but a more complex operation of “sophisticated processes” such as the superconscious mind and a larger universal intelligence with which we are considered to be connected.

The total faculty of our minds to perform millions of different things is so astounding regardless of our own ignorance or efforts to demean ourselves to mere limited entities. We can access a higher level of consciousness where the definition of intelligence is carried beyond current understanding.

From The Power of Now: The manipulative ruler

“All inner resistance is experienced as negativity in one form or another. All negativity is resistance. In this context, the two words are almost synonymous.
"

“Nonforgiveness is the very nature of the mind, just as the mind-made false self, the ego, cannot survive without strife and conflict. Remember that the ego needs problems, conflict, and "enemies" to strengthen the sense of separateness on which its identity depends.”

"The quicker you are in attaching verbal or mental labels to things,
people, or situations, the more shallow and lifeless your reality becomes, and the more deadened you become to reality, the miracle of life that
continuously unfolds within and around you. In this way, cleverness may be
gained, but wisdom is lost, and so are joy, love, creativity, and aliveness.
They are concealed in the still gap between the perception and the
interpretation."

"Every ego confuses opinions and viewpoints with facts. Furthermore,
it cannot tell the differences between an event and its reaction to that event.
Every ego is a master of selective perception and distorted interpretation.
Only through awareness – not through thinking – can you differentiate
between fact and opinion. Only through awareness are you able to see: There is the situation and here is the anger I feel about it, and then realize there are other ways of approaching the situation, other ways of seeing it and dealing.
The ego cannot distinguish between a situation and its interpretation
of and reaction to that situation. You might say, “What a dreadful day,”
without realizing that the cold, the wind, and the rain or whatever condition
you react to are not dreadful. They are as they are. What is dreadful is your
reaction, your inner resistance to it, and the emotion that is created by That
resistance."
Ekhart Tolle.

Our egoic minds are always ON, did you find the OFF bottom?...
So if it is on the ON state all the time, that includes the moments our level of attention is diverted and it can “PLAY the old records” freely.
It is ON the moment we go to sleep, it is ON the moment we wake up.
It is ON while we are taking shower, walking on the street, watching TV or listening to music. It is ON when we meet other people, it is ON when we are alone. It is scanning the environment and everything it includes in order to create a sense of separateness, a perfect place where to feel individualized. It is scanning every thing we do, think and feel in order to find a trigger that matches an old pattern of reactive emotions and get rooted once and again.
It will create conflict, as a matter of self-indulgence and oppose every idea that threatens our identification with it.
Is there any new insight about a situation happening in our lives that we are trying to test in opposition to the strong determination of our ego?. Than almost immediately we will feel conflict inside. A world that is perceived through our 5 senses is all that it needs and all that it wants to know.
So a different reality, more over, a reality where sense perceptions are secondary is ruled out from the ego. The existence of the ego depends on our complete identification with the world of forms. So the line of division is very thin, the ego very tricky and adaptable when convenient. The way to spot the ego?, even though very simple: are we deriving our identity from something external (including the roles we perform, material belongings or accomplisments, happenings, our past story), or are we deriving it from the consciousness within?. Better said, is our life about "Doing" or about "Being"?

Regaining control

3 characteristics of the Ego:

1. It wants to be special.
2. It is always righteous.
3. It wants to be separated: creates conflict while competing with others and isolating, a strong sense of individualization.

When we keep living with an unattended egoic mind, we pay the price by enslaving ourselves to an eternal demanding inner child.
That is a fact: our egoic minds are like the counter of a time bomb. Thoughts are the mitotic cells, mind is the cancer.
The complains starts as an instinctive pursuit of primordial needs, and become more sophisticated but nevertheless, endless shopping lists. The need of food, shelter and love becomes a need of sex, fashion and commodity. The need of comfort, care and attention becomes a need of power, success and popularity. The need of security, identity and presence becomes a need of every external source of self-indulgence.
And it takes over our lives, giving us a sense of continual urgency to silence the continual stressful voices within. We than do one of 2 things: we cling to the past or dread for the future.
We cling to the past whenever we feel guilt, resentment, frustration, remorse. Or we eagerly wait the counting years that will take us to that imagined future when we will finally be ok. Meanwhile the living moment of now stays unattended, while we live overlapping our past to it or projecting it to our future. Now is never the moment, because if that is the case, we don’t want to even live the now with that torturer of the mind.

The ego, as it appears, is a self-destroying device. In its effort to rule over our lives, it takes us over and leads us to the most difficult path of all. The outwardly directed mind, unaware of it self can run amok at any moment of provocation. It can be a sudden raise of stress or anxiety levels, a severe life threatening situation, or any kind of highly emotional upheaval. The triggers can be as slight as the “last drop” to provoke a flood, or impactful as loss, illness and so on.
We feel powerless the moment that “the beast” is released from its cage. It seams uncontrollable, the forever talkative mind becomes a loud machine of mixed thoughts…a real torture chamber that drains out the life from us.
It seams natural that we try to escape it, and we do it usually. Nobody wants to dig in their minds to find out what is buried inside.

A way to disempowering the ego starts with simply looking at it. As a very wise spiritual master said: “Looking at it makes it disappear, ignoring it makes it stay”.
By looking at it we are identifying it as what it is: a feature of our minds, that accomplish the task of giving us a sense of individuals. Just that, nothing more.
Taking it too personal empowers it, so acting out every command only perpetuates it.
What I mean is that we must pay attention to what we are thinking, to our thoughts.
If we find most of the time egoic patterns (that is, as I said before, the need to be right, the sense of superiority, the strong sense of individualization by means of competing or creating conflict) we should not act it out, and rather stop. And acknowledge that this is our ego; but that we are not egos walking.

When we become used to deal with the inner complaining child, by time it will recede in its efforts to take over our lives. In the start it will use all sort of strategies to manipulate us and break us down. But with constant effort and compromise, it will understand that there is a higher self who can take care of its needs very well and that there is nothing outside to find, that will provide better than what can be found within.

Mind enslavement

Some people can feel really uneasy just by the idea of being left alone with themselves.
Most of people left alone in a long period of isolation can become mentally ill.
A mind that has been left wandering freely for a long period of time can become a serious threat.
And the cause lays in who is ruling over whom: is it the subconscious mind or the conscious mind?
We are all born with an inherent identification device, a very slippery and sophisticated escapist. The inconspicuous for many, ladies and gentleman: here comes The Ego.

The ego is the primitive way of identification we all have.
It develops rapidly at young age, and it gets sophisticated after that.
Its function is to give us identity; which unfortunately, means separation, labeling, sense of superiority in most cases.

We can obviously say it develops rapidly at young age because the continual chit-chatting it creates in our minds is as irrational as a toddler making a tantrum over futilities.
When a newborn is presented to its mother, he doesn’t have a sense of self yet.
Therefore, it completely depends on her caregiver. Whenever gets separated from it, a primordial, survival instinct takes place: fear of abandonment.
When the baby reaches the stage of self-identification, it also identifies its environment as his possessions. Whenever those possessions are taken away, another primordial instincts surface: ownership.
When a kid grows and becomes an adolescent, an extreme need of belonging and suitability emerges. The self-image becomes a source of strong identification, that whenever rejected or inadequate, it will shatter his self-esteem.
These primordial, basic instincts as many others, are solidly planted within the ego. And even when we are no longer toddlers, or babies incapable of taking care of ourselves, the ego will still display its primordial features.
If we take a moment to hear the voices within our heads whenever we encounter a source of distress or displeasure, the same baby/toddler/adolescent relives in there:

Don’t live me, I can’t live without you!...

I don’t know what to do...

Nobody likes me!, nobody understands me!...

People should respect me...

What am I going to do alone?...

You should listen to what I say….

I am right, you are wrong…

There’s not enough time...

If I am doing emphasis in the mechanics of the mind, is because it has deeper implications than merely increasing scientific knowledge or helping us to understand ourselves a little bit more.
The core of our cultural heritage is “thoughts passed on”, believes that are inherited from generations to generations, and even “exported and imported” from nation to nation.
We have been using a very powerful tool “the mind” to individualize us and give us identity; but that practice have ended up separating us, alienating us. And furthermore, it have ended up operating through us (our minds), making our ideas of “superiority”, “exclusiveness” and “righteousness” a very real cause to fight for. This is the root of our pathology of separation, what has made possible to see each-other in the eyes and swear that we are different and never cohesive. It has made possible the impossible: that we are not one.

Looking IN for perfection

We are not bodies with brains, I said before. What we are and who we are is beyond our limited brains.

Saying that something is “perfect” can be taken as a sign of arrogance, even more when we are talking about ourselves.
But what we are and who we are is that, just perfect. Perfect, in this sense, doesn’t mean that we are “better” or “superior” than─ It means that we are and have the perfect equipment for accomplishing something thoroughly. In this case, for completing our function in this life.
I want to start from the outside to the inside: body-soul.
“Perfect” is the word that comes to mind when we are witnessing the incredible and elegant design of our human body.
Every single cell designed for an specific function. And the whole number of cells, trillions of cells, working in perfect synchronization to fulfill a single function: keep the body alive and fit.
And even more, there is an engine behind this orchestra. Preceding the slightest task of any cell in the body, the subconscious mind is regulating the function, without our conscious awareness of what is happening. If we had to consciously “direct” every function of our bodies, we will never be able to undertake any other activity. Just commanding our hearts to beat every second would take all our attention inside (and completely unaware of the external world).
I think this is a good point to introduce the well known triad of the mind: subconscious, conscious and superconscious.
The subconscious mind thus, is what takes care of involuntary functions (such as breathing, digesting, producing and liberating hormones, et) as well as immediate (primitive) responses: retrieve our hands from the fire, shiver when cold, sweating when hot, et.The role of the subconscious mind, is than, in short to “take care of our organic business” and granting us free time for more important endeavors.

Now, here comes a very good question: if the conscious mind do not take role over the subconscious tasks, than who???
There is enough evidence that this is not so, that involuntary activities are not managed by our conscious efforts. Nevertheless, automatic reactions and functions do take place in our bodies (including the capacity to dream, associative memory and sudden insight)

In pro of evolution. Introductory message

Humans as I learned theoretically, in a very systematic way, are an exquisite and complicate existence with different levels of consciousness. We have a material ensemble (body) constituted of millions of cells functioning harmoniously. We have the same amount of physiological processes, concerted by an ethereal, still enigmatic mind.
And finally, the most ungraspable of all the concepts, the indescribable and ridiculously infinite grounds of the spiritual realm, of which we have been said to belong ultimately.
I could write a full text for the human mind and its disconcerting processes even from a personal experience; but I would never end the study as many scientists in this modern world that are still tapping the very tip of the iceberg. Or better said, still stepping into the abyss of the biggest dark hole on the universe.
Here the riddle becomes impossible to understand; the transformation of human’s most intimate motivations.
And I can come back from this fact, to the personal experience of someone who has a hypothesis. This life is experienced as a burden by almost all. Some pass it unnoticed from time to time, some feel it raw as a recent wound that never heals.
Therefore the arduous labor of non stopping investigations, but the number of failures keeps adding. For there are new revolutionary theories; but for a still unknown reason, it fails to fit for everyone.
As if there is a solid, definite struggle within men, among good and bad forces. Movies displays it, every entertainment media broadcasts it, and each single voice in the collective human mass utters it. Unfortunately, the bad is winning followers and the good is being left behind. Or at least, that is what we believe.
I sense there is an urgent need in our planet for a collective, massive awakening.
From our world of delusional dreams of forms and shapes that we grasp, hold and cling on to; to a broader perspective that addresses the most intimate and fundamental questions we all need to answer in order to evolve.
We are not mere bodies with brains.
We do have a body, we do have a brain; but we are none of those.
But knowing this can be disheartening, even traumatic or so depressing for the unprepared mind; that it is better to go on by small steps thru this journey. Once a glimpse of the further shore is taken, the most amazing journey one could ever have is possible: a journey to awareness.

those little miracles of life

I bet you have witnessed these small miracles that life is performing all the time.
Like, that one day you were walking obliviously and when you gazed the sky, there was a shooting star, crossing over the same moment you gazed.
Or, like that moment you were waiting for the rain to stop and once you watched out of your window, there was a rainbow above the sky.
Or even, one day, when you were deeply in love with someone, and when you raised your loving eyes in to the sky, you saw a "heart-shapped" cloud. Or a wonderful full moon, or birds nesting right in your balcony.

Life presents us with miracles all the time. All of it.
The trick is, are you looking at them?

A perfect "heart-shaped" wild flower blossomed on my backyard. Right from the concrete.

A piece of forest

I am living in a city of ever greens.
And being born and raised surrounded by nature, I am very keen on ecologic environments.
To contemplate a garden of trees and flowers is an effective way to do meditation and release the mind of continual activity. So having my private piece of forest, right here in my house is a gift from heaven.

As you move south of the equator line, the typical vegetation of southamerican countries is diverse and very rich.
We enjoy wide spaces of land and structures, where housing can be pleasant and healthy. Greenhouses are a gear of the market and decorating living environments as well as public and private properties, is a growing business.

At home we always had a prolific garden, typically tropical fruit trees and a collection of wild flowers and all sort of plants from the region.

Enjoying simple things is a good way to start showing gratitude for the opportunity of being alive.

Life is short. What are you paying attention to ?

Can you stop?...in the middle of whatever you are doing right now and ask these questions?
I said, in the “middle of whatever” deliberately. We are used to “do stuff” automatically.
And that includes when we do things because we are supposed to, because we were told to do so or because somebody or everybody is doing so.
In the middle of our lives (or in the end, or even in the start) we find ourselves doing something. It can be a life-time career, job, marriage, partnership, parenthood, school or whatever.
And we think, or at least, most of us think, that this is all.
I mean, that LIFE is just this.

Our perspective of LIFE, has not changed no matter how old is our race. No wonder why we still keep dragging the same problems.
It has been reduced into “birth, growth, reproduction and death”, as we were taught in old school all over the globe. If not, than why do we study, work, get married and have children?

These are the most fundamental activities we all perform, and most of us have not answered the “fundamental questions” yet.
The fundamental activities are the reason why we made our lives sustainable, fair.
But without knowing the “fundamental answers”, our life is not SELF-SUSTAINABLE.
At least, we do not experience it that way.

And that is why we keep on “doing stuff” in order to sustain ourselves and the ones we made our responsibilities.
Because we do not know that we are actually self-sustainable, and that because we do not know who we are, why are we here and what is the meaning and the plan for everything.
We keep experiencing life as a burden, the majority of us do. In one way or another, we are not happy all the time. How could we? if we keep thinking exactly the same way about everything?
So we keep adding “more stuff” to do, achieve, get, produce, etc. in order to be happy enough, or something close to that.
The thing is that we do not see the enormous impact of our cultural procedure. We do not see that the reason for a war nearby, starvation over there, social repression farther away, and all kinds of violence around our whole planet is precisely this: we are living without meaning. We are passing thru earth without knowing what we are supposed to do here.
And the sad part is, that we do not care. Or if we do, we do not try. Or if we try, we give up.

Personally, for the biggest part of my life (that is, since puberty), I have been questioning myself about those fundamental questions.
I was one of those who cared, but did not try and gave up.
Until a year ago.
Until the burden was so unbearable, that I felt as is my life had a life of its own. Weird huh?
Well I was not so mistaken…
